Ugly manipulation.

The last time I wrote about my job I explained how extremely disappointed I was that I had not received my first month’s pay on time. Although I do not want to be a nag and everyone was saying that the company is in terrible financial trouble I finally dared to ask the financial manager if she knew when we were getting paid. She was surprised by the question and said everyone had been paid.
The one I described as the unhappy employee in my previous post insisted that she had paid me. I insisted that there was nothing in my bank account. The unhappy employee redid the payment but two days later said to me – you know I paid you twice. So I got a bank statement and gave the proof to her in writing that I had only been paid once and that was 7 May. She forced me to phone the bank who said they could see what I see. She was then forced to phone the company’s bank who explained to her that there had been insufficient funds in the account at that time so the payment did not go through to my bank account the first time she tried to pay me.
The following day I was informed by the financial manager that a meeting was going to take place and I must be present. In the meeting they told the unhappy employee that she was too slow and did not understand Pastel Accounting and this was causing problems. She threatened to walk out and no one stopped her. An overly calm woman (I am going to call her Loni) kept on telling her don’t be on the defensive, we are here to discuss things and by her overly calm and condescending demeanour she was making the unhappy employee even more angry who started screaming and stood up and walked out. She packed up half the stuff in the kitchen and office saying she was taking all her possessions with her. The boss did not stop her so I guess all the mugs, cutlery, towels and office stationery she took with her belonged to her.
The boss spoke to her and they agreed on what money was owed to her. She got into her car and drove off.
Loni ran to her office and said I must have this chair and wheeled the chair back to her own office then she ran back to the former employee’s office and was now joined by the financial manager. Loni said I must have this large desk mine is so small the financial manager agreed and two strong men were summoned to move the desks around. One of the directors joined them and said GB must now go into that office they disagreed and said they wanted two of their buddies to go into the office. The director asked me what I wanted and I said they must decide what will work. I wanted no part of their vulture raid.
I had wondered why they had offered me a job when financially the company was not in a good place. I got my answer that day. During the meeting the boss said to the unhappy employee you get the highest pay here but you are falling behind with your work, she insisted that she was falling behind with her work because she refused to work over weekends anymore, with no overtime, in order to keep up to date with her work.
They now have one salary less to pay and they have secured jobs for their mates.
Loni and the financial manager manoeuvred things in such a way that key positions in the accounting department have been handpicked by them. They are making sure that all of them who were transferred when the other branch closed down will be in vital positions, whether it is to further steal from the company or to secure jobs for each other will still become clear as time goes by.
Three people are now doing what the former employee did so in my opinion she was overloaded and bullied out of her job. The unhappy employee was very nasty towards me but to be fair, I think Loni should feel bad that she bullied a 63 year old woman out of a job.

  1. Terrible!!! I would hate working there. In fact, to be truthful, I hated all of my jobs. I was so happy when I retired and began writing freelance. Wrote and published 3 memoirs, newspaper columns, and now my blog. Happiness!

  2. Unfortunately that sort of situation is quite frequent in the workplace and in times of recession some people will do anything to get rid of the competition.

  3. This sounds very bad. But there is one advantage to the situation. And that is, that it is clear cut. You really don’t want to work in a place like that. Sometimes we have mixed feelings, and then it’s harder to make the choice… harder to go looking for something else. But now, you must start investigating the possibilities of finding other work. I’m so sorry that you are going through something like this for a second time.

  4. I agree, time to move on though not easy at all on any level. I like and find comfort in ShimonZ’s wise words. A clear cut situation makes the decision to move on easier. Sorry this is happening GB.

  5. I hate office politics! Unluckily it always seems to rear it’s ugly head in business and if we are not careful it swallows us up and spits out what remains left over. Look after yourself!

  6. What an unhappy mess! There had to be better ways to resolve the situation, but it kind of blew up, didn’t it! Once you see that kind of outcome you know what can happen…so perhaps you’ve been given a very unfortunate and uncomfortable insight. Forewarned is forearmed…although I don’t like the violent connotation in that–but you get it! Debra
